Geography

Geography

Mauritius is a volcanic island approximately 2400 km off the southeast coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Its highest peak, Piton de la Rivière Noire, reaches around 828 m in altitude and its breath-taking 330 km coastline is surrounded almost entirely by one of the world’s largest unbroken coral reefs. Rivière Noire is a popular destination for deep-sea fishing and is home to Flic en Flac – one of Mauritius’ longest and nicest beaches.

Port Louis

Port Louis

Port Louis, the modern Mauritian capital on the north-west coast, is a bustling port with a revitalized waterfront and a busy market. The famous Caudan Waterfront has over 150 retail outlets; Fort Adelaide has spectacular views of the city and the Champ de Mars is the oldest racecourse in the Indian Ocean region. The Bazaar Port Louis with its mountains of fresh colourful produce is also a must-see; Mauritians from all over shop at this market.

Activities

Activities

There is plenty to do besides relaxing on some of the world’s best beaches – including golfing, quad-biking, canyoning, hiking, horse-riding, rock-climbing and many water sports. With Mauritius’ incomparable beauty, activities like skydiving and zip lining are propelled to a whole new level. Mauritius’ turquoise lagoons are protected by a coral barrier reef, thus creating exclusive and accessible diving opportunities year-round.

Black River Gorges National Park

Black River Gorges National Park

Black River Gorges is Mauritius’ largest national park, covering roughly 2% of the island - almost 17,000 acres. Many highly endangered native plants and animals such as the rare pink pigeon, Echo Parakeet, and Macaques monkeys are protected by this national park. Hiking at Black River Gorges is a big attraction, especially for nature lovers who can see over 311 species of endemic flowering plants and 9 bird species indigenous to Mauritius.

"Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius."

Regions

Centre de Flacq, 20 minutes from Belle Mare beach, is the biggest town on the Eastern coast. The South is the wildest and least developed region of the island, characterised by its ancient ruins and the majestic waterfalls of Rochester Falls. The Central region of the island houses the protected nature reserves of the Maccabées Forest and the Valley of Colours, with its lush vegetation, colourful flora and fauna, streams, and waterfalls.

Île aux Cerfs (East)

Île aux Cerfs, one of the most beautiful places in the Indian Ocean, and is a resort just off the coast of Centre de Flacq. The waters of Île aux Cerfs are perfect for water skiing and parasailing. On the island, there is a boat house where you can hire water skis, pedalos, sailboards, surfcats, Laser dinghies and canoes. Two-hour boat trips are offered to the Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall.

Curepipe (Central Region)

Curepipe's main street is Elizabeth Ave. There, the recently renovated colonial-style Hôtel de Ville (1902) functions as the town hall. In its gardens, you'll find a statue of the fictitious lovers Paul and Virginie from Bernadin de St Pierre's 1788 novel. Between Curepipe and Floreal is the spectacular Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct crater 85m deep and more than 200m wide from the rim, from which one can enjoy extensive views of the island.

Black River Gorges National Park

This beautiful highland area south-west of Curepipe is like no other part of the island. About 6km from Curepipe, Mauritius' only mountain road reaches the dam wall of the park's large reservoir, Mare aux Vacoas. The best time to visit Black River Gorges National Park is during the flowering season between September and January. Look for the rare tambalacoque or dodo tree, black ebony trees and the exotic birds that perch in them.
